Entry Requirements

scroll down

Entry to our Schools is dependent upon satisfactory academic attainment at respective stages of the curriculum. Progression through the Schools is also dependent on satisfactory academic progress, a positive attitude to work, a sound disciplinary record and a commitment to the wider aspects of School life.

Whilst the expectation is that pupils will progress through, this can never be guaranteed.

Day Nursery (5 months to 3 years)

Berkhamsted Day Nursery offers two options:

  • Extended Day 7.30am – 6.30pm or
  • School Day  8.30am – 3.30pm

All offers are subject to availability of a place in the age appropriate room.

Pre-Prep (Ages 3 – 7)

Entry to Berkhamsted Pre-Prep is usually into our School Nursery year, Stepping Stones (3+). It is expected that children will have the necessary social and developmental skills to be able to access the Early Years curriculum. This will be assessed during a meeting with the Headteacher (including those from Berkhamsted Day Nursery).

For those seeking admission within Key Stage One at Berkhamsted Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 1), we would expect children to have the necessary social and developmental skills to be able to access the curriculum provision for EYFS and early Key Stage One. Informal age appropriate assessments will be arranged if spaces are available.  Reference will be made to previous assessments and school reports for children seeking entrance at 5+ (Year 1).

For those seeking admission at 6+ (Year 2), children will be invited to attend an informal assessment day at the Pre-Prep. The assessment day will be made up as follows:

  • Tests in English and Mathematics which are designed to be appropriate for children working within the National Curriculum programmes of study for Key Stage 1.

A progress report from your child’s current school will be requested before places are formally allocated.

Prep (Ages 7 – 11)

We will invite all children seeking admission to Berkhamsted Prep from 7+ (Year 3) to attend appropriate entry assessments (excluding those children currently attending Berkhamsted Pre-Prep). The entrance assessment at 7+ to 10+ for entry to Berkhamsted Prep is made up as follows:

  • A morning of tests in English and Mathematics which take place in November and March
  • A group interview with the Head and/or Deputy Head

The tests are age-standardised and are appropriate for children working through the National Curriculum programmes of study in Key Stage 2.

A progress report from your child’s current school will be requested before places are formally allocated.

Heatherton (Ages 3 – 11)

Entry into Heatherton’s Co-educational Nursery takes place three times per year in January, April and September, and the earliest opportunity to join is the term in which the child turns three years’ old. We invite prospective Nursery and Reception pupils for an informal pre-offer visit with their parents to assess that we are able to meet a child’s needs. We also request a copy of the child’s most recent report from their current school, nursery or play group.

Children from Year 1 upwards are invited to spend an assessment / taster day at the School. They will complete a variety of assessments in English and Maths to help us identify particular strengths or weaknesses. Recent reports, a reference and any test scores are also requested from the previous school. Following the relevant assessments, the Headteacher then meets with parents to discuss their daughter’s taster session prior to an offer being made.

Senior School (Ages 11 – 16)

We set entry examinations for all children wishing to enter our Senior Schools to ascertain whether they can reach the academic standards we set. An interview with the Head of Girls or the Head of Boys is scheduled ahead of the entry assessment. The assessment will include a Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics test and dictation at 11+ entry and, in addition to this, a Non-Verbal Reasoning and Foreign Language test at 13+ entry. While Berkhamsted Boys has two main intakes at Year 7 and Year 9, our main intake at Berkhamsted Girls is Year 7, with additional intakes at both Schools subject to spaces being available.

A reference from the pupil’s current school is also required.

Overseas students, once registered, are required to sit entrance tests in English, Maths and possibly Non-Verbal Reasoning (each of one hour duration) under exam conditions at the nearest British Council office, through a recognised partner agent, or at their current school. A reference from the student’s current school is also required.

Sixth Form (Age 16+)

In view of national changes to public examinations in 2017, students completing their GCSE courses in 2018 will receive a mixture of letter and number grades.  To view our updated Sixth entrance requirements, please refer to further details in Berkhamsted Sixth Entrance Requirements

We will ask you and your son or daughter to attend an interview with the Head of Berkhamsted Sixth at which their future study programme is discussed. A reference from the prospective student’s current school is also required.

Progression to Year 13 depends on satisfactory attainment, as determined by the student’s term grades and results across the course of the Lower Sixth year, in addition to the end of year examinations.  Work ethic, discipline record and contribution to the wider life of the School are also taken into account.

Overseas students, once registered, are required to sit entrance tests in English, Maths and possibly Non-Verbal Reasoning (each of one hour duration) under exam conditions at the nearest British Council office, through a recognised partner agent, or at their current school. A reference from the student’s current school is also required.
